How to remap the Plus Key on OnePlus phones
The Plus Key is the customizable shortcut key on recent OnePlus phones. KeySnap may be able to give it shortcuts that the built-in list does not offer. We have not tested it on a OnePlus phone yet.
What the Plus Key does by default
OnePlus introduced the Plus Key as a customizable key (OnePlus Community, “Introducing the Plus Key”). You choose its function in your phone’s settings. Options reported in OnePlus community posts include sound and vibration modes, saving to Mind Space, the camera, the flashlight, the voice recorder, translate, a screenshot and No Action (OnePlus Community, options).
A OnePlus community guide says the key did not offer separate single-press, double-press and long-press functions: the presets ran on press and hold (OnePlus Community, “Plus Key - Everything You Need to Know About It”). That may change between phones and updates.
How to remap the Plus Key with KeySnap
- Install KeySnap and finish the setup on HomeOpen KeySnap and follow the three setup steps on Home. They start with turning on the Accessibility service, which is how Android lets an app notice a hardware key.
- Set the Plus Key to No ActionIn your phone’s settings, find the Plus Key options and choose No Action if your version offers it. The name and place of the setting depend on the software version. With the key set to nothing, only KeySnap reacts to it.
- Turn on Advanced ModeAndroid hides most manufacturer keys from normal apps, so expect to need Advanced Mode for the Plus Key. Open Settings > Setup tools in KeySnap and follow Turn on Advanced Mode. It pairs with your phone’s own Wireless Debugging, needs Wi-Fi and Developer options, and does not need root.
- Create the shortcutTap New shortcut, then in When choose Key press. Pick a press pattern: Single press, Double press or Long press.
- Detect the Plus KeyTap to record, then press the Plus Key. KeySnap shows Listening… and then Key recorded. Tap Save key. If nothing is recorded, KeySnap does not see the key on your phone yet. Check that Advanced Mode is running, then try again.
- Choose what it doesUnder Do, tap Add action, search the catalogue and pick one, for example Flashlight. Tap the check mark at the top right to finish, then press the key to try it. You can add another shortcut with a different press pattern on the same key.
Limits to know about
Support varies by phone and Android version, and only keys that KeySnap detects can be remapped.
- KeySnap can only use a key it detects. If the Plus Key does not register when you record it, KeySnap cannot remap it on your phone.
- If the key is still set to a OnePlus function, that function may run as well as your shortcut. Setting it to No Action, where offered, avoids that.
- We have not tested KeySnap on a OnePlus phone, so we cannot say which press patterns work on it. The OnePlus community posts above are not our own testing.
- Advanced Mode needs Wi-Fi and Developer options for setup. After you restart the phone, open KeySnap again to bring it back.
- Support, press types and actions vary by phone and system version.
